7 Wonders Of Carom Seeds

Another spicy plant is increasingly becoming popular. This mainly of the health benefits it offers in addition to its culinary uses.

It is from the family Apiaceae – Trachyspermum ammi or known as Ajwain plant. It originated and still grows in many areas of India.

Ajwain plant resembles parsley and bears white flowers which eventually develop to greenish brown seeds. Seeds have strong scent as thyme and with pungent taste, reason why they are used in many mid-eastern and indian dishes.

The seeds come in many names but the most common are carom seeds, Ajowan, or bishop’s weed.


Carom seeds have reasonable amounts of fiber, protein and various antioxidants. To add, they contain impressive trifecta of essential oils – thymol, pinene, and terpinene. These oils make carom seeds a star among known superfoods.


There are several ways to consume carom seeds. Some roast to bring out the strong aroma, toast with butter before adding to any cuisine, chewed raw or drop directly to a cup of tea or a glass of water.

Some cooks sprinkled them on the dough in making rotis.


  1. Relieves indigestion and acidity

Drink everyday one teaspoon of carom seeds, one teaspoon of cumin and one-half teaspoon of ginger powder mixed with water will ease heartburn and improve digestion.

  1. Relieves nose congestion during colds

Put carom seeds powder in a thin cloth, inhale frequently or keep under your pillow to get rid of nose congestion. To treat the cold itself, make a paste of the seeds and jaggery by heating and take two teaspoons twice a day to feel better.

  1. For ear and toothache

One or two drops of carom seeds oil are enough to ease the pain in the ear. Inhaling the fumes from burning carom seeds can stop toothache. Gargling with a mixture of one teaspoon carom seeds powder and salt in a lukewarm water is also a good option.

  1. To ease arthritis pain

Essential oils from these seeds provide antibiotic and anti-inflammatory effects to improve discomfort and pain due to arthritis. This is done by simply soaking the affected area in water mixed with carom seeds and allow to stay for a few minutes to work on the swelling.

  1. For wounds and acne

Thymol oil acts as effective fungicide and germicidal agent for wound cleansing to prevent further infections and to reduce scars caused by a deep cut.

For acne scars, make a carom seeds paste and apply for 10-15 minutes and rinse.

  1. Oma water

This water extracted from carom seeds is a viable solution to prenant women’s problem with indigestion. It also helps solve concerns with having irregular mentrual periods. It is also safe for babies as prevention of colic.

Oma water is very easy to prepare. Simply boil two teaspoons of carom seeds (roasted) in water, strain and drink. Honey can be added to taste.

Daily consumption enhances rate of metabolism, burns fat, and helps in weight loss.

  1. For hair and skin

Carom seeds slow down the pre-mature greying of hair. Cook the mixture of carom seeds, curry leaves, dry grapes, and sugar in a cup of water. Drink a glass of this mixture everyday and see results soon.

Seeds are excellent mosquito repellant, thus protect your skin against their bite. Combine mustard oil with carom seeds and smear on cardboards then place in the corners of your room to to push away mosquitoes.
