Plant-Based Meat And Protein Is The New Food Revolution

Proteins are the building blocks of human life. They are many types that vary in function.

In general, major sources of protein are from animal meat. A huge majority of human population loves to consume meat. This is due to the fact that by nature, we crave for protein.

Lately, there is plenty of focus on vegetarianism and plant-based diets. It has been established that plants are great sources of protein as well.

The 68th United Nations General Assembly declared the year 2016 as the official “International Year of the Pulses”. Pulses — beans, lentils and peas — are cheap, low-fat source of protein. Typically, they have twice as much protein found in whole grains. They are with high fiber content, vitamins, and minerals.

Pulses make up the “new plant-based meat protein” this 2017. This new idea has thrilled most vegans as it cuts out reliance on overly processed meat. It also allows cooks and chefs incorporate more options in their menus.

Here are some plant-based food with high protein content:

Edamame and Tempeh

Both food are from soybeans. Edamame is a perfect appetizer for most vegans or a healthy snack for some while Tempeh is shaped into a dense cake after fermenting soybeans.

Tofu is the classic plant-based source of protein from curdled soymilk.

Lentils are high protein, high fiber legumes. They are quick and easy to prepare.

Black and Lima Beans

Black turtle beans are affordable source of protein with fiber, antioxidants and packed with vitamins and minerals. They are usually use as an added ingredient in most dishes.

Lima beans or sometimes called “chad beans” or “butter beans” because of their starchy but buttery texture. They contain the amino acid leucine which is important for muscle synthesis in adults. This beans help promote digestive tract and cardiovascular health.

Note: Always cook lima beans before eating. Raw lima beans contain linamarin compound which is potentially toxic to health.

Peanuts, Seed, Potatoes, Spinach, Corn, Avocado and Broccolis are convenient sources of proteins. They contain relevant amount of fiber and other nutrients necessary for health improvement.
